Experience and Professionalism
My name is Dr. Angela Mackay and I have over 20 years experience in nursing, servicing adults and geriatrics in various specialties including but not limited to patients in Brain Injury Rehabilitation, and Mental Health / psychiatric inpatient units and the community. Position presently is working with the Inpatient Behavioral Health team at University of Maryland Midtown Campus, Baltimore, MD as Clinical Nurse Manager since November 2020 and an adjunct Professor at University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD.

Prior to this time, I was Nurse Manager at Howard County General Hospital, Columbia MD for three plus years during which time I had the privilege to open and oversee a non-covid psych unit and covid psych unit when the pandemic started in February 2020. Before that, I spent over 10 years working with the psychiatry consult team of a 500 plus bed level 1 Trauma Hospital in Minnesota, covering the non-mental health units, educating non mental health staff in real time on psychiatric crisis situations, facilitating Disruptive Behavior classes , and was an active member of several Committees.

I developed and implemented the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) and trained over 200 mental health Registered Nurses as well as Mental Health Associate to respond to crisis situations to the non-Mental Health over a 26 months period. The goal of the PERT team was to contribute to the health and well-being of individuals with mental illness by enthusiastically and empathetically assisting with patients who are experiencing crisis situations while in our care, verbal de-escalation techniques, negotiation, and redirections.

I was the lucky recipient of the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year 2015 as well as American Psychiatric Nurses Association Individual Award 2015 for work done relating to Workplace Violence and the use of PERT. Several years later, I acquired my Masters in Nursing, Doctorate in NUrsing Practice as well as Post certification degree of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in summer of 2021 all from Walden University
